One of the oldest forms of hay production is silage wrapping. In the early days, silage and hay production was very labour-intensive. It involved harvesting the silage, trimming the stalks and combining the silage with hay in a ready to use form. It was then sent out for consumption.
Hay was used as a useful food source, but there were several disadvantages associated with it. It was costly to produce and took much time to be converted into food for livestock. The silage itself was also difficult to process because of its tough nature. Moreover, the resulting food had to be stored for a longer period.
It was, therefore, necessary to modify the simple feeding process. Hence, the development of silage wrapping technology took place. It involved rolling or pressing the Silage wrap, which reduced the amount of soil that had to be tilled before the silage could be used.
Furthermore, it used a perforated cover to maintain the moisture content of the silage while it was being rolled. With this, the grain would not spoil when it was being processed. Thus, the new technique significantly decreased the amount of time required for silage production.
Additionally, the silage would retain its moisture content for a more extended period. In the past, the moisture content of the silage would dry up after a specific time. However, using silage wrap would provide enough moisture content so that the grain could be kept good.
Using different methods, farmers in Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark all produced the first silage wrap. It used the perforated cover and the rolling method, which were rather expensive.
However, this type of silage wrapping did not have a significant impact on the industry. At that time, this method was mainly adopted for domestic consumption. It is because there were limited resources in this particular area. Another reason was that the rate of change was slow, and it took a long time to transform this method into commercial production.
However, this method did not gain much importance until relatively recently, when farmers and manufacturers could use different cost-effective equipment for processing the silage. Such in turn made the development of this technology more critical.
During the initial stages, this type of wrapping needed an enormous amount of patience and hard work. Several trials were required to find the right equipment and the right design for rolling the silage. The rolls were also carefully trenched to avoid breaking.
It was not easy to determine the type of Silage wrap equipment required. It took a lot of trial and error for farmers and manufacturers to find the right equipment that would work efficiently finally. However, this method of silage wrapping has many advantages, including the fact that it uses a large number of resources.
Silage is a tough grain that can withstand heat. Furthermore, its quality can last for quite a long time. Although some areas of the world require high carbon emissions, there are a lot of farmers who prefer this covering over any other kind of covering.
